Designing effective lubrication features in cast bronze components involves careful consideration of material properties, shrinkage allowances, and the specific operational requirements. By following best practices and guidelines for groove and hole design, you can ensure efficient lubrication, reduced friction, and extended service life of the components.
Types of Oil Grooves
- Straight Axial Grooves: Ideal for bearings with a length-to-diameter (L/D) ratio above 1.5. These grooves run parallel to the shaft and are simple to machine.
- Circular or Annular Grooves: Suitable for applications with variable loads or pressure-fed lubrication systems. These grooves run around the circumference of the bushing.
- V-Shaped Grooves: Commonly used for oil lubrication as they facilitate the formation of an oil film across the bearing surface.
- Figure-8 Grooves: Enhance the distribution of lubricant, particularly useful in applications where the direction of motion changes frequently.
- Spiral Grooves: Wind around the bushing, helping to distribute lubricant evenly in rotating applications.

High-Strength Brass Alloy with Graphite Embedded
Properties: This material typically combines the strength and corrosion resistance of brass with the self-lubricating properties of embedded graphite, making it ideal for high-load and low-speed applications.
Designing Lubrication Features
- Strategic Placement: Position grooves and holes to ensure even distribution of lubricant, considering factors like load, speed, and direction of movement.
- Groove Dimensions: Calculate dimensions accurately to maintain the desired lubricant viscosity within operating temperatures.
- Load and Speed Considerations: Tailor groove design to specific load and speed conditions, ensuring adequate lubrication for high-load or high-speed applications.
- Non-Load Areas: Grease grooves should be opened in non-load areas to avoid reducing the load capacity of the oil film
Design Guidelines for Grooves
-
Width and Depth: For general applications, the groove width (W) should be 0.10 times the bearing bore, and the depth (D) should be half the width. For precision applications, W should be 0.06 times the bearing bore diameter, and D should be 0.5W.
- Placement: Grooves should terminate 1/8″ to 1/4″ from the ends of the bearing to prevent lubricant loss and ensure even distribution.
- Lubrication Holes: Should be strategically placed to match the groove width, with chamfered edges to facilitate unrestricted lubricant entry.
