PTFE & POM Solutions for Enhanced Performance
Composite bushings are an advanced bearing solution designed for high performance and durability across a wide range of industrial applications. They ensure stable, low-friction operation, even in environments where conventional lubrication is difficult or not feasible.
Built with a multi-layer construction—usually a steel backing for strength, a porous bronze layer for load support, and a low-friction PTFE or POM surface—composite bushings provide excellent wear resistance, reduced friction, and extended service life. Their self-lubricating design minimizes maintenance requirements and eliminates the need for external lubrication.
Composite bushings designed for heavy loads, dry running, and corrosion resistance. Ideal for automotive, construction, and machinery.
What is a Composite Bushing? Structure & Material Composition
- Steel Backing (Steel Backing): This foundational layer provides the primary mechanical strength and exceptional load-carrying capacity. Depending on the application requirements, this backing can be made from carbon steel, stainless steel, or even bronze, offering versatility in corrosive or specific environmental conditions.
- Sintered Bronze Interlayer (Sintered Bronze): A porous layer of sintered bronze powder is metallurgically bonded to the steel backing. This interlayer serves multiple critical functions: it ensures a strong, integral bond between the backing and the polymer sliding layer, effectively transfers heat away from the bearing surface to prevent overheating, and acts as a reservoir for the polymer material, enhancing its adhesion and stability.
- Polymer Sliding Layer (Polymer Layer, PTFE or POM): This outermost layer is crucial for the bushing’s tribological properties, providing low friction and wear resistance. The choice of polymer—Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or Polyoxymethylene (POM)—dictates the bushing’s lubrication requirements and performance characteristics.

PTFE Composite Bushing: PTFE Lined Composite Bushings (Dry Sliding)
- Material: Typically composed of a steel backing, a sintered bronze interlayer, and a PTFE/Lead mixture (or other PTFE-based compounds with fillers) as the sliding layer.
- Operation: Designed for dry sliding operation, meaning they can run effectively without any oil or grease. This makes them ideal for environments where lubrication is undesirable due to contamination risks or impracticality.
- Performance: Exhibits a remarkably low friction coefficient, excellent wear resistance, and a wide operational temperature range, typically from -195°C to +280°C. The PTFE layer creates a transfer film on the mating shaft during operation, which acts as a protective, low-friction interface.
- Best for: High load, low speed, and oscillating movements, particularly in inaccessible locations or applications where traditional oil lubrication is impossible or forbidden.
POM Lined Composite Bushings (Boundary Lubrication)
- Material: Consists of a steel backing, a sintered bronze interlayer, and a Polyoxymethylene (POM, also known as Acetal) sliding layer. The POM layer is typically designed with specific grease pockets or oil indents.
- Operation: Requires initial grease (pre-lubricated) to establish a lubricating film. The surface features strategically placed grease pockets (oil indents) that retain lubricant, ensuring continuous lubrication under boundary conditions.
- Performance: Offers high load capacity and excellent impact resistance. With proper lubrication, it achieves a lower friction coefficient and superior wear resistance, making it highly durable in demanding environments.
- Best for: Heavy-duty applications, dirty or dusty environments, and chassis components where intermittent lubrication is acceptable and beneficial. Examples include agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and vehicle suspension systems.

Why Choose Composite Bushings?
- Maintenance-Free Operation: Especially the PTFE series, these bushings are ideal for inaccessible locations or applications where routine maintenance is difficult or costly. Their self-lubricating properties significantly reduce downtime and operational expenses.
- High Load Capacity: Thanks to the robust steel backing, composite bushings can withstand significantly higher loads compared to pure plastic bearings, bridging the gap between metallic and plastic solutions.
- Compact Design: The thin wall thickness of composite bushings allows for smaller housing dimensions, contributing to more compact and lightweight designs in machinery and equipment.
- Cost-Effective: In many applications, composite bushings provide a more economical alternative to expensive bronze bearings, offering comparable or superior performance with reduced maintenance needs.
- Chemical Resistance: Both PTFE and POM layers exhibit excellent resistance to a wide range of industrial fluids, chemicals, and gases, ensuring reliable performance in harsh chemical environments.
Industrial Applications Of composite
- Automotive: Widely used in door hinges, shock absorbers, wiper systems, seat mechanisms, and pedal assemblies, contributing to smoother operation and extended vehicle life.
- Hydraulics: Essential components in gear pumps, cylinders, and vane pumps, where their low friction and high load capacity ensure efficient and reliable fluid power transmission.
- Agriculture & Construction: Critical for heavy-duty machinery such as tractors, excavators, and forklift trucks, particularly in pivot points, linkages, and boom mechanisms that operate in challenging, dirty environments.
- General Industry: Found in a broad spectrum of equipment, including textile machines, packaging machinery, fitness equipment, and material handling systems, where they enhance efficiency and reduce maintenance.
